Aromatic plant extracts can have powerful effects and in some cases can cause serious side effects if not used correctly. They should not be used unless the user has been trained in their safety and contraindications. These safety notes are included here to ensure that any owner who is considering offering aromatic extracts to their animal is aware of the key safety issues.

Please contact Purely Animals for further detailed guidance.

  1. Never force the oil or its aroma on to an animal and never physically put it on an animal unless advised by your aromatics specialist. It must always have the ability to self-select. Do not use essential oils as you would for human use. Animals can suffer toxic effects if used in the way they are used for humans.
  2. Do not use if the animal is on other medication without first consulting your Aromatic extracts specialist or Veterinary Surgeon.
  3. Hold bottles tightly so that the hand covers most of the bottle to prevent the animal snatching or swallowing it.
  4. Keep droppers or lids safely where the animal cannot ingest them accidentally.
  5. Do not allow the sensitive areas such as nostrils, eyes, or genitals to come in to contact with the oil unless advised by your aromatics specialist, as some can be irritants or be photo-sensitive (sunlight sensitive).
  6. If an adverse reaction appears, contact your Aromatic extracts specialist or Veterinary Surgeon.
  7. Do not reduce or stop any medication without reference to your Veterinary surgeon.
  8. The detoxifying process can result in the initial symptoms being exacerbated at first. (A healing crisis).  If this persists for more than 2 days consult your Aromatic extracts specialist or your Veterinary Surgeon.
  9. Do not use as an inhalation strapped to your animal.
  10. Do not use on irritated skin unless advised by your Aromatic extracts specialist.
  11. Respect all oils as you would over the counter medications.  Keep them out of reach of children.
  12. Do not use if you or the animal are pregnant without confirmation from your  Aromatic extracts Specialist.
  13. Do not give a full body massage to an animal with the oils unless applied diluted in a shampoo form and washed off fully. Always take advice from your  Aromatic extracts Specialist first.
  14. Do not spill oils on to clothing or floors as some may stain.
  15. Always ensure that you have read up on an extract and contraindications and safety notes before offering to your animal.

If you have any concerns for the health of your animal you should always consult your Veterinary Surgeon.  Veterinary permission or a veterinary referral must always be obtained before you seek any complemetary therapy for your animal. This is not an alternative to veterinary care.
